Overview
Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Pune conducts offline examinations biannually in the months of July and December, offering a structured evaluation process for both internal and external students. These exams are held at designated centres within Pune and across other locations (only in the state of Maharashtra), making it convenient for students from various regions to participate.
The offline exams provide students with the opportunity to showcase their proficiency in classical Indian music, instruments, and dance in a traditional, in-person setting. Evaluations are carried out by experienced faculty members, ensuring a rigorous and comprehensive assessment of each student’s skills and knowledge. These examinations uphold the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya’s high standards of artistic and academic excellence, contributing to the students’ growth and mastery of their chosen disciplines.
Exam rules
Minimum Candidates Requirement For Centers
There should be a minimum of 25 candidates enrolled for each subject from a center for examinations. If there are fewer than 25 candidates, arrangements for an examiner will be made only if the examination fee for 25 students is paid. The centre in-charge will also have to arrange for the examiner’s stay and meals.

Exam Subjects and Sessions
- Candidates must maintain a minimum gap of one year between two exams, starting from Praveshika Poorna.
- Simultaneous appearance in two subjects within the same session is permitted up to Praveshika Poorna. However, certain subject combinations are restricted beyond this level.
- Vocal and instrumental examinations from Prarambhik level must be accompanied by tabla app/machine/live.
- Vocal examinations from Madhyama Pratham onwards must be accompanied by Tanpura. Harmonium accompaniment is not allowed.
- From Visharad pratham exam of musical instrument and classical vocal, live Tabla accompaniment is compulsory (except for percussion instruments)
- For Tabla Examinations - Lehra or Nagma accompaniment is compulsory from Prarambhik level. Lehra app or machine use is allowed till Madhyama Poorna.
- From Visharad pratham Tabla examinations, live vocal or instrumental (Lehra or Nagma) accompaniment is compulsory.
Examination Requirements
- It is mandatory to pass both the written and practical examinations.
- Failure in any of the two assessments - Practical and theory exams of Madhyama Pratham and Madhyama Poorna necessitates reappearing for both the practical and theory exams.
- From the Visharad Pratham exam onwards, candidates that have failed to clear one particular assessment (practical or theory) but have secured more than 50% i.e passed in the other assessment need only to give re-examination of the assessment they have failed in. In such a case he/she will have to attach a “no objection certificate” signed by the centre in-charge, as well as the full amount of examination fee along with the application form. This candidate will have to appear for this re-examination in the next session. If he/she wishes to sit for the exam after one year, both the practical as well as written examination will have to be taken again.
Eligibility Criteria
- Minimum age criteria for Prarambhik exam is 7 years and for Madhyama Pratham it is 12 years
- If a student has cleared the vocal Visharad Poorna examination and wishes to appear for the exam for a musical instrument such as harmonium, sitar, etc, he/she can directly appear for Visharad Pratham. The same applies if a candidate has cleared the Visharad Poorna exam in an instrument, and wishes to appear for the vocal exam.
- Simultaneous appearing for two subjects in the same session will be allowed up to Praveshika Poorna examination. A candidate is not eligible to give examinations of two subjects simultaneously that consist of theory (written) assessment. For example - If a candidate appears for Madhyama Pratham Vocal examination, he can appear for a second subject exam of Prarambhik till Praveshika Poorna ( exam level 1, 2 and 3 which don’t have theory assessment) in the same session. However he cannot appear for any exam from 4th exam level onwards simultaneously for two subjects.
- Students with a B.A. degree in Music can skip examinations up to Madhyama poorna.
- Accredited artists or music experts with a B+ grade at All India Radio or Doordarshan may appear directly for Visharad Pratham. However, examinations will be conducted only at the Pune centre of BSPM’s Gandharva Mahavidyalaya,Pune.
- If you have taken exams from external institutions, you must provide the syllabus for those examinations. An authorized person at GMV Pune will determine which examination you should appear for next based on your prior qualifications.
Additional Information
- You can claim grace marks for 10th std. SSC examination (Maharashtra Board) if you have given the first three or first five examinations of any subject. (If a student has passed Praveshika Poorna in 6th standard he will not get grace marks for 10th std. However, if the same student gives the 5th examination in between 7th to 10th std he can claim the grace marks for 10th std.)
- Examinations for light music (Sugam Sangeet) are conducted exclusively in the December session.
- Keertan examinations are conducted only in July.
- Incomplete application forms will not be accepted.
Examination
