At what age can one start learning Indian music at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Pune?
We welcome students aged 7 and above for our Prarambhik (beginner) courses in all subjects. At this age, students have the foundational maturity to grasp the basics of Indian classical music and dance.
For younger children (ages 4-7), we recommend our Balgeet classes, which introduce them to the fundamentals of singing in a fun and engaging way, helping cultivate an early appreciation for the art.
Do I need to own an instrument before starting classes?
While it’s beneficial to have your own instrument for regular practice, we provide instruments during class sessions for beginners. As you progress, owning your instrument becomes essential for consistent practice. For online classes it is necessary for you to own your own instrument. You can contact us for the same.
Is it too late to start learning music as an adult at your academy?
Should I learn Hindustani or Carnatic music at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Pune?
Do I need to know music theory to understand Indian classical music?
What materials do I need for the classes?
For instrumental courses, having your own instrument is recommended for daily practice.
For dance courses, you will need Ghungaroos which should be bought after your Guru advises you to do so. For all courses you will need to buy study material (books and audios) available at GMV’s office.
How are the instructors qualified at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Pune?

What happens if I miss a class?
We understand that unforeseen circumstances arise. Our academy offers options to attend compensatory classes or provides materials to cover missed content, ensuring continuity in your learning journey.
Do you provide a professional degree for disciplines?
Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Pune offers Govt. recognized structured certification programs in Indian classical music, dance, and instruments. These include Prarambhik,Praveshika, Madhyama, Visharad and Alankar levels, which are professionally recognized but not university degrees.
Is this a full-time university?
No, Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Pune is not a full-time university. It is an institution dedicated to the teaching and promotion of Indian classical performing arts and we conduct part time classes.
Is this a government-recognized institute?
Yes, Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Pune is recognized by Sangeet Natak Academy (Govt. of India) and Ministry of Culture (Govt of Maharashtra).
Will a Visharad certificate from the institute be equivalent to a degree?
The Visharad certificate is considered equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in Indian classical music and is widely accepted in the field. However, for university recognition, students should verify with specific academic institutions.
Do you provide study material for the courses?
Can I study two subjects at once?
Yes, you can study two or more subjects simultaneously but you can only give simultaneous exams till Praveshika Pratham.
Can I continue my lessons from where I left off if there is a long gap?
Yes, students who have taken a break can resume learning. If appearing for exams, an assessment may be required to determine the appropriate level.

Are online classes available for students who can’t attend in-person classes/abroad students?
Yes, online classes are available for students who cannot attend in-person sessions. These classes cover both theory and practical training.
I want to take admission and stay in Gurukul. What is the process?
In order to secure admission in Gurukul you must contact the office. Selection depends on availability and eligibility.
My voice is not good; will I still be eligible for vocal music classes?
Yes, vocal quality improves with training. Anyone passionate about learning Indian classical music can join, regardless of their initial vocal ability.

My child is less than 7 years old. Are there classes available for this age group?
We recommend Balgeet classes for children aged 4-7. These sessions introduce the fundamentals of singing in a fun and engaging way, fostering an early appreciation for music.
For other classes, if you would like your child to attend, you may seek permission from the Principal’s office. However your child will not be eligible for examinations until 7 years of age.
I wish to complete my first level in a short period due to time constraints. Is there a way to make it possible?
We offer crash courses for students who wish to complete Level 1 in a shorter time frame. These courses cover the same number of classes as regular batches but in a fast-track format, ensuring you don’t miss out on any practical or theory components.
With this option, you can take your exam after just one month of Prarambhik classes instead of the usual six months. Crash courses are available during the summer, and for customizable class options, please contact the office.
Exams
When are the offline examinations conducted?
Our offline examinations are held biannually, typically in July and December. Specific dates may vary; please contact our office for exact schedules.
When are the online examinations conducted?
Online examinations are conducted throughout the year. It is recommended to fill up the exam form minimum two months prior to your preferred date for ease of scheduling.
Where are the examinations conducted?
Exams are held at designated centres within Pune and other locations across Maharashtra, facilitating participation from various regions.
What is the minimum number of candidates required for a centre to conduct exams? (check if valid)
A minimum of 25 candidates per subject is required. If fewer, arrangements for an examiner will be made only if the examination fee for 25 students is paid. The centre in-charge must also arrange for the examiner’s stay and meals.
What documents are required when submitting the offline exam form?
Students must submit the following –
1. Standard age proof,
2. Recent photograph
3. Passing certificate of the previous examination (not applicable for Prarambhik examination).
Where can I find the exam form for online/offline exam forms?
Online exam form is available throughout the year and the link of the same will be sent to you after inquiry to our email. Offline forms are available in the office approximately 2 months before the exam and will have to be collected and submitted to the office or a PDF copy will be provided which you can print and submit.
Is there a required gap between examinations?
Yes, candidates must maintain a minimum gap of one year between two exams, starting from Praveshika Poorna.
Can I appear for two subjects in the same session?
Simultaneous appearance in two subjects within the same session is permitted up to Praveshika Poorna. Certain subject combinations are restricted beyond this level.
What are the accompaniment requirements for vocal and instrumental examinations?
Vocal and instrumental exams from Prarambhik level must be accompanied by a Tabla app/machine/live. From Madhyama Pratham onwards, vocal exams require Tanpura accompaniment; harmonium is not allowed. From Visharad Pratham, live Tabla accompaniment is compulsory for musical instruments and classical vocal (except percussion instruments).
What are the requirements for Tabla examinations?
Lehra or Nagma accompaniment is compulsory from Prarambhik level. Lehra app or machine use is allowed till Madhyama Poorna. From Visharad Pratham, live vocal or instrumental (Lehra or Nagma) accompaniment is compulsory.
Is it mandatory to pass both written and practical examinations?
Yes, passing both written and practical examinations is mandatory. Failure in any assessment necessitates reappearing for both practical and theory exams. From Visharad Pratham onwards, if a candidate fails one assessment but secures more than 50% in the other, they need only reappear for the failed assessment in the next session, with a “no objection certificate” from the centre in-charge and full examination fee.
What is the minimum age requirement for examinations?
The minimum age for the Prarambhik exam is 7 years, and for Madhyama Pratham, it is 12 years.
Can I claim grace marks for the 10th standard SSC examination?
Grace marks can be claimed if you have completed the first three or first five examinations of any subject. Specific conditions apply regarding the timing of these exams in relation to your standard; please contact our office for detailed information.
When should examination forms be submitted?
For the July session, forms must be submitted by April, and for the December session, forms are accepted until September. Late fees apply after these deadlines. As these dates may vary, please contact the office for exact details.
What is the process for registering for online exams?
Once an inquiry is made via email, we will send you the online exam form link along with a payment link. After submitting the form and completing the payment, our online exam coordinator will work with you and an examiner to schedule a mutually convenient exam date.
Exams are typically scheduled about a month after form submission, so we encourage candidates to complete their forms on time for smoother scheduling. Assessments are conducted via Google Meet or Zoom, and students are guided accordingly.

Yes, you can appear for the next level of exams at GMV Pune, provided an authorized representative evaluates your eligibility based on the syllabus you have previously completed.
When can I give my first exam?
A minimum period of 6 months is required to complete the syllabus for the Level 1 exam through regular classes. However, the exact duration depends on your ability to grasp both practical and theoretical concepts.

- We will send you an affiliation form to fill.
- Kindly complete, scan, and return it along with the required documents mentioned in the form in PDF format if you are abroad. If situated in India, send the documents via post.
- Our management will review your submission and make a decision regarding acceptance.
- Once approved, you will receive a confirmation email.
- After confirmation, you will need to make the payment.
- Upon successful payment, we will issue your Affiliation Certificate via email.
- The affiliation certificate will be valid for 5 years from the date of issuance.
