Projects by Vidyalaya

Gandharva Mahavidyalaya is recognized for its outstanding and out-of-the box musical concepts.

Along with the regular concerts and programs, some unusual and uniquely conceptualized projects are arranged. Sanvad Sangeet is also one of them; it brings out the rare and less familiar Ragas and musical concepts. For example, the program has revived several unknown forms of Rag Kanada, Rag Malhar, Rag Todi, Rag Kansa, and Rag Saranga.

Apart from organizing the musical concerts of these Anavat Ragas by popular artists, the institute also records and preserves these audio and video recordings. This treasure of musical history is carefully preserved by the institute for the music worshippers.

Systematic documentation is also done by the managing team of the Mahavidyalaya through associating with various organizations from Pune. Organizations like Lalitkala, Madhukansa assist Gandharva Mahavidyalaya to arrange and conduct many of the music related activities which focus at preserving and boosting Indian classical music.

In year April, 1998, Gandharva Mahavidyalaya conducted Akhanda Swarayadnya to celebrate the birth century of Pandit Vinayakarao Patwardhan. The program commenced with Pune’s famous classical vocalist Savani Shende and ended with the Tabala performance of Pandit Lalji Gokhale.

Over 100 performers took part in this Akhanda Swarayandya as a tribute to the birth century of Pandit Vinayakarao Patwardhan and performed for 30 minutes each which turned out to be a continuous musical program for 50 hours. Apart from celebrating the birth century of Pandit Vinayakarao Patwardhan, the program also celebrated the fifty years of India’s independence.

Gandharva Mahavidyalaya also offers several scholarships to budding talents from various areas of music covering - vocal music, several dance forms like Kathak, Bharatnatyam and instrumental forms. Many teacher training programs are also conducted by the institute to assist the teachers. The musical competitions organized by the Mahavidyalaya are considered as one of the most prominent competitions not only in Pune but also in several parts of Maharashtra and other parts of India. Students from many parts of Maharashtra take part in these competitions.
