Bharatnatyam Classes

Bharatnatyam is one of the ancient and a popular classical dance forms in India, has a divine origin and is specifically known for its purity and chastity. As per the legend this dance form was depicted by Brahma on the request of Devas to create a Veda that can be understood by common man. It is believed that this fifth Veda created by Brahma was propagated through Bharat Muni, who wrote the bible of classical dances known as ‘Natyashastra’.
 

As per Natyashastra, this dance form combines the three Natya, Nirtta and Nritya. The dance form includes graceful and tender movements of the body in an artistic and elegant way. This is closely associated with the region and religion; hence its origin can be traced back to Tamil Nadu and mainly performed in temples.
 

This dance form is very complex and hence the need of training for this dance form should be imparted from a very early age. This is the first course. Dance as an art form requires a lot of stamina and flexibility. This level aims to inculcate these qualities in the student and prepare a firm foundation for his/her future in Bharatnatyam.

The training begins with warm-up exercises for different parts of the body like the head, toes, neck, sides, etc. The student is introduced to basic posture and basic adavus like tatta, natta, metta and tatta kudicchi metta. Apart from this, the learner is familiarised with concepts such as taala and laya, which are of prime importance in dance. As part of theoretical knowledge, the student will be given information about the various classical dance styles that are prevalent in India. In the oral examination, he/she will be asked about asamyukta hasta, shiro, dristi and greeva bheda, pada bheda.
