Bharatnatyam is one of the ancient and a popular classical dance forms in India, has a divine origin and is specifically known for its purity and chastity. As per the legend this dance form was depicted by Brahma on the request of Devas to create a Veda that can be understood by common man. It is believed that this fifth Veda created by Brahma was propagated through Bharat Muni, who wrote the bible of classical dances known as ‘Natyashastra’.
 

As per Natyashastra, this dance form combines the three Natya, Nirtta and Nritya. The dance form includes graceful and tender movements of the body in an artistic and elegant way. This is closely associated with the region and religion; hence its origin can be traced back to Tamil Nadu and mainly performed in temples.
 

This dance form is very complex and hence the need of training for this dance form should be imparted from a very early age. As the name of this course suggests, the student will have reached a certain level of proficiency in the courses completed thus far, and the last two courses will aim to make him/her a good teacher too. There will also be two written papers in these courses.

In the courses thus far, the student will have completed one full margam. Thus, this year, he/she will learn a varnam and a tillana in a different raga. As mentioned earlier, this course also tries to inculcate the qualities of a good teacher in the dancer. With that purpose in mind, the student is given a junior student, and he/she has to teach her three steps of adavus and a line of abhinaya (Pallavi) in eight days. For the written exam, the student will be expected to possess detailed knowledge of topics such as Art in Indian, Western and South Asian countries, temple architecture of the Chola, Maratha dynasties, and the relationship between shastra and parampara. Also, he/she will be required to study ancient texts like Abhinayadarpan and Sanskrit plays like Shilapudikaram, Tirutavai, Shakuntal and so on. The second written examination deals with an in-depth study of the Natyashastra in relation to aspects of dance, and the rasa theory. It will also involve a study of texts like Sangeetharatnakara and Nritta Ratnavali. Apart from this, the student will also be required to understand the concept of choreography with the help of the Natyashastra.
